Past Musings: Bloom

BLOOMJeremy Irons & The Ratgang Malibus (Small Stone Records) A cosmic transcension into the illusory world of Jeremy Irons & The Ratgang Malibus, Bloom, is the band’s first album. It introduces itself with opening track “Elefanta”, a mid-journey oath “It’s not a joke this time, I’m leaving reality for sure,” assures us that we’re witness to a story that started before we got here. Title song “Bloom” meters similar endurance as “Elefanta”, and is conceivably similar as it describes our lead having another revelation like the oath we started with. Perhaps not altogether intimidating technically or stylistically, the plait of mellotron and tremolo that curtains the eight tracks provides a heavy tip of the hat to the band’s psychedelic rock ancestors. However, the range and wail of Apelmo’s voice reaches a point letting out every breath he’s got that is most distinctive of those of hard-rock giants. The gang fashions a nomadic character and pulls us along on the journey, the “Where am I going?” question isn’t quite so daunting with so many descriptions of the gold, glittering, and transformative along the way to distract your eyes and ears from the road.

6 of My Favorite Plants for Fall Color

One of my favorite things about the warm weather is experiencing the many waves of flowers in bloom. From the first daring crocuses to the last hearty rose, Spring through late Summer reserves nothing when it comes to reminding us of how alive (even Brooklyn...) is during the warmer months. Today may be the Autumnal Equinox (and the weather seems to have taken to the idea), but there are still many flowering plants that will stick around through the next few months. Here are 6 of my favorite:

Cosmos - Available in so many variations, all of vibrant colors, Cosmos are a fairly hardy annual. Although they may look like the delicate wildflowers of late Spring, they will flower through the first frosts of the season.

Calendula - You may have heard of calendula in use for skincare it has gentle antibacterial-disinfectant properties. Besides healing, it's yellowy-orange petals are a wonderful way to adorn the autumnal garden and as a hardy annual will continue to bloom through the first frosts.

Chrysanthemums - Probably the flower most commonly associated with this time of year, Chrysanthemums are hardy perennials that come in pale yellows to brighter oranges and mauves. They grow very full and will fit right in with all of the pumpkin and gourd displays. They are perhaps the hardiest of flowers this time of year, which is probably why all of your neighbors will have them too.

Pansies - Often seen in window boxes, Pansies are hardy perennials that come in very many variations, many of which will flower until the first frost. They are wonderful accents and I love to use them for color, but I can't help of think of the singing flower scene from Alice in Wonderland when I see them.

Melton Pastels - A taller hardy perennial, Melton Pastels are often a mix of pastel and bright pinks when in bloom. They have a funky liveliness to them, as their pink baubles look slightly off-kilter (in a good way!).

Appleblossom Rosebud - Appleblossom Rosebuds are actually geranium, despite their name. Geraniums of just about any kind with bloom up through the first frost, often in bright reds and pinks. While they are not quite categorized as "hardy" perennials, I think my window geranium has been with me for over 10 years! Appleblossom rosebuds are milder in color and bloom in white and pastel pink in clusters of what looks like small rosebuds. They are one of my favorite for stretching out the colors of Spring and Summer into the new season.

5 Songs to Get Cozy with this Fall

There is something exhilarating about leaving for work at dawn to find that the trees on your block, which have for the past few months given homes to waves of cicadas and given us shade suddenly, almost as if in a decisive accord, all prepare to take their last few breathes of summer life. To feel a fresh chill in the edges of your ears, the tip of your nose, your toes--you're still wearing sandals--and as you pull whatever layer of clothing you have tighter you hear the low roar of rustling leaves, a chorus of trees yawning before their long slumber. Here are 5 tracks to keep you from becoming a somnambulant as the natural world slows down around us.

"Vox Populi" by Stephane Wrembel Like maple syrup, Wrembel's guitar lines ooze a warm darkness that is perfect for quiet autumnal evenings. This piece in particular brings the form of 1940s Latin Quarter clubs, shadowy trios in the back room of Barbes, and is perfect for settling into your own nook with a cup of tea, perhaps a Moroccan mint.

"It Will Come Back" by Hozier One of the few popular artists of today to widely use a steel guitar, Hozier brings a modern blues with a folky melody and chain-gang-esque rhythm. While he may be howlin' about love, this song suits a soul pining for warm summer nights-- they will come back!

"Steady" by The Staves Soft like the yellows and oranges of fallen leaves, this song rustles like the natural chime of trees starting to turn in for the year.

"Bobby Reid" By Lucette Appealing to the grotesque-curious in the best of us, "Bobby Reid" can't help but bring about a sense of the life cycle as we come to the wearier-weathered months.

"Civilian" by Wye Oak The title track of Wye Oak's 2011 album, this song has resurfaced as the closing theme to season 4 of the Netflix series Longmire. Maybe it's just the earthy Wyoming tv sets, but this song captures the spirit of the lengthening nights and earlier twilight.

25 Years Ago Today

Today we remember Stevie Ray Vaughan who died in a helicopter crash 25 years ago on August 27th, 1990 in the Alpine Valley. He's a legend lost and a legacy continued.
